Twenty years ago, a dozen clinicians came together around a simple idea: Health policy should reflect the realities of what happens in exam rooms, clinics and hospitals. That first meeting became the Alliance for Patient Access.
Since then, AfPA has grown into a national organization with clinician-led working groups and stakeholder coalitions spanning more than a dozen disease areas. Through advocacy and educational resources, AfPA helps ensure that clinician and patient perspectives inform policy decisions about access to care, medication value and the importance of the clinician-patient relationship.
Health policy has changed significantly since 2006. Coverage restrictions and utilization management practices continue to delay treatment and place administrative burdens on clinicians. At the same time, new treatments and technologies are creating more opportunities for care to be tailored to individual patient needs.
For 20 years, AfPA has brought clinical experience and patient perspectives to health policy discussions. That work continues as the organization advocates for policies that protect the clinician-patient relationship and support timely access to appropriate care.
